MAIN MISSION AND PROGRAMS AND HISTORY

  1.      Literacy in rural and semi-urban areas
  2.     Small scale dams and wells realization in remote and disadvantaged villages
  3.      Gardening and small loans searching for vulnerable rural producers
  4.   Replicating transferable agricultural (gardening as well) and breeding technologies
  5.    Inititiation to basic bureautics and internet for adults and pupils
  6.   Disabled pupils tutoring and training
Established in Fada N'Gourma, Province of Gourma, Chief town of the Eastern Region of Burkina Faso, Association DEFI is a young organization of about 10 years. Previously founded under the name of Association Todiyaba (Let us Help each other in Gulmancema language) in 1992, then Association DEFI (Challenge in French) our organization officially started working in 1999 with trainings and capacity buildings on behalf of rural populations. It was mainly on literacy programmes. The target populations were taught how to read, write and calculate in their mother tongues.

At the same time a programme for "Soumbala" (a locally popular condiment made from nere seeds) production was conducted for female and male groups in Nayouri, Gayéri, Diagourga, and the district of Diapangou comprising 25 villages. Four training centres were then erected.

Apart from the above mentioned activities Association DEFI encouraged the populations in the production of sesame seed and taught them how they could improve their output. Breeders were also taught how to  care for the sick cattle and how to feed and breed productive species.

In 2001 an increasing number of rural populations called for the support of the Association in order to help them obtain plows, wheelbarrows, carts, fertilizers and fences. Having no means to buy the needed materials DEFI was obliged to ask for the intervention of government or NGOs. A small part of the materials were obtained but the demand was still increasing. The NGOs often proposed farming tools as loans and the rural populations often accepted but due to nature the reimbursements sometimes delayed. Gardening has become part of the daily life of the inhabitants of many villages thanks to the works of Association DEFI.

DEFI contributed to bringing potable water wells,
hydraulic drillings and dams in many villages. The main ones are located in Nayouri (a dam of 200,000 m3), Gayéri ( the chief town of Komondjari Province) where the first hydraulic drilling (fountain) was dug with the help of DEFI and his partners;  Diagourga (where water fights used to be frequent). We enumerated more 10,000 people who benefited from the wells and dams made by DEFI and his partners since the beginning of our activities.

The different wells and dams' water served for humans and cattle consumption and  vegetables production as well.

The literacy programmes have improved significantly the lives of many people so that they no longer  need to ask for someone else to help them calculate or order their goods.

Now new activities have been included to the former ones; it is mainly:

Iinitiation to computer use ( computer literacy) for adults, training and tutoring disabled pupils.

    Fundrainsing.

Used materials recycling and sale (the revenues are used in order to carry out our programmes and missions).

Raising rural populations awareness on children schooling (in our area the schooling rate is below 40%).

CURRENTLY DEFI IS IN NEED OF USED OR NEW COMPUTERS FOR HER TRAINING PROGRAMS.

That project will consist to train teachers (nursery, primary and secondary) to use WORD, EXCEL, POWERPOINT, OFFICE and the INTERNET. We have noticed that all those who have received such a training have greatly improved the classroom activities and some are even planning online or continuous training.

Exchanges have been made possible between Burkina Faso schools and West African ones thanks to these kinds of projects. Pupils can now conduct their own researches and discussion with schools in Western countries.

The difficulty lies mainly in the fact that less than 10% (government statistics) people in our region have access to a computer and the internet whereas more than 50% of the population in main towns know and can use a computer and internet.

DEFI is now searching for 400 used or new computers to place them in schools and NGOs or other educational organizations. Provided the computers support WINDOW 98, we don't actually mind the age.
